Emerging Business Trends Every Job Seeker Should Know

Business trends may change year to year, but what doesn’t change is the impact they have on company growth and development.

When entering the job market and looking for companies, you should always consider the emerging business trends that will impact the company and you as a job seeker.

On that note, check out my two-page, salary-doubling resume cheat sheet that will optimize your resume and help you stand out in a competitive job market. I created it using my experience with a client who was able to double the initial offer they received; submit your information below to receive it:

Different trends will impact companies differently, but you should keep yourself versed in major business-impacting your industry as a whole, especially before an interview. Impress your interviewer by being prepared to answer any questions about the company and your potential growth, and how these and other trends impact each:

Cloud Technology

Cloud technology is a trend you may have already heard about, but how much do you really know about it? Most businesses are shifting toward cloud storage to base their data and information outside of a physical server in the office.

Why do this?

Cloud storage is a safer, more secure way to store all of the company’s data. Accidental shortages, spills, or flooding can wreak havoc on a company that uses a physical server. Losing all of that information is comparable to getting locked out of all of your email and banking accounts, with no backup to reset it. This can cause major stalls and delays in a company’s productivity, resulting in monetary loss.

If you understand how this technology works and how it prevents mass data and information loss within a company, you can leverage this knowledge as a talking point in your interview. Employers will know you understand what’s going on in their organization across the board, not just in your role at an individual level.

Automation and AI

Process automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are being implemented in almost every business space to increase productivity, both by function and to eliminate silos between functions. Although these terms are often interchanged in context, process automation and AI are two different technologies.

What’s the difference?

Process automation software is a type of advanced programming that can be installed into any existing process and used to automate repetitive, semi-structured tasks. On the other hand, artificial intelligence is a type of science that is coded to mimic the human brain and, like the human brain, can edit itself to perform better. Automation can only do what it is taught, while AI is consistently learning a better, more efficient way to complete tasks.

These technologies can help ensure that processes are completed accurately and holistically within a business. These technologies are being implemented in the corporate world to save money by reducing the amount of training labor needed for employees and time wasted on mundane tasks.

Some employees peg automation and AI as bad technology that is going to displace them. It is important for you as a prospective employee to understand that if a company has or will implement this technology, it will be to help you better accomplish company goals, not to replace you. Please back this up with a statistic. Insert a statistic on how AI has helped create jobs if we look at the net effect.

Taking the time to understand the difference between these two technologies can help you separate yourself from other candidates and portray yourself as a forward thinker in any interview.

Ethical Data Usage

Most companies have a vast amount of data collected on their employees and customers. This is data that might be public or private information, meaning that the company has an ethical responsibility to keep the data secure and protected.

This data could include anything from employees’ personal information to customers’ locations. Whatever the data may represent, there are ethical ways to go about sharing data with other companies and protecting privacy. As consumers become more aware of how companies are using their data, this trend continues to grow in importance at every company.

In an interview, it is important to ask and understand how a company approaches data ethics. Confronting a potential employer about what steps they take to promote privacy and protect sensitive data can reflect your own strong ethics and interest in the ethics of the company.

Cyber-Security

Cyber-security is one of the biggest trending topics in the world of business currently. With cyberattacks on the rise across industries in 2019, there is a growing concern surrounding data and encryption security. Many companies are focusing on what steps they can take to better enhance security systems, while simultaneously educating their current employees on cyber-safety best practices.

Showing a potential employer that you understand cyber-security risks and know how to safely navigate the cyber-verse can help them feel secure in your employment at their company. Additionally, being able to engage in a conversation about cyber-security and current risks that companies face will show you are in-tune with large-scale, current problems.

Interviewing can be a stressful process that many candidates get nervous about. The best way to reduce this stress is to understand the company you are interviewing for, the position itself, and the emerging business trends that may be relevant. If you can talk about any of these points and show your interviewer that you are in-tune with current emerging business trends, you can separate yourself from the rest of the candidate pool and be more likely to get the best job offer for you.
